China Shoots Down Drones Using Laser Weapon

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 04 November 2014 | 23.12

A laser weapon that can shoot down drones has been developed by Chinese engineers, state media has reported.

The Low Altitude Sentinel System has been successful in shooting down low-flying, slow-moving drones during tests.

It can detect small aircraft within a 1.2-mile radius and shoot it down within five seconds, according to the China Daily newspaper.

It cited a paper published by the Academy of Engineering Physics, which said the system is designed to destroy small drones flying at less than 110mph below 500 metres.

The system could be integrated into vehicles to help shoot down drones during events in urban areas, China's Xinhua News Agency said.

There are benefits of lasers over missiles - they cost less to run and can be fired continuously.

They work by concentrating energy on a single spot on a drone to burn through its surface.

During the test, the laser shot down more than 30 drones - successfully hitting each of the targets.

A more powerful version is being developed by creators China Jiuyuan Hi-Tech Equipment Corp.

A statement from the firm said: "Intercepting such drones is usually the work of snipers and helicopters, but their success rate is not as high and mistakes with accuracy can result in unwanted damage."

Pirate Bay Co-Founder Arrested In Thailand

A co-founder of file-sharing website The Pirate Bay has been arrested in Thailand.

Hans Fredrik Lennart Neij - known in hacking communities at TiAMO - was reportedly trying to cross into the country from Laos.

Immigration police said he was detained at a checkpoint in the northeastern town of Nong Khai.

Police Major General Chartchai Eimsaeng told reporters: "Mr Neij was detained while trying to cross into Thailand from Laos where he had been living since 2012."

He added that a US-based movie association had hired a Thai lawyer to search for Neij and his photo had been given to immigration police in Nong Khai.

"It might have been a coincidence, but he was wearing the same grey T-shirt that was in the photo," Major General Chartchai said.

"The immigration police officer who spotted him in the car recognised him, so he pulled his car over."

Pirate Bay is one of the world's most-visited sites and offers lists of links to pirated content, including movies, games and music.

Neij, 36, was convicted of aiding copyright infringement by a court in his native Sweden five years ago.

He and three others were handed one-year sentences and ordered to pay damages totalling £2.4m - but he fled while on bail.

Police said Neij has been living in Laos for around two years and travelled to a house he owned on the Thai resort island of Phuket almost 30 times.

He was expected to be sent to the capital Bangkok and then deported to Sweden.

Another co-founder, Gottfrid Warg, was arrested in Cambodia in 2012 and served his sentence in Sweden.

Last week, following a trial in Denmark, he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for hacking IT firm CSC.

Ebola Victims Break Quarantine In Hunt For Food

Ebola patients in West Africa are exposing others to the deadly disease as they are being forced to leave quarantine to search for food, charities have warned.

Aid agencies working with the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) are desperately trying to get food to those being monitored to stop them from leaving clinics and spreading the virus.

In Sierra Leone, a government system in place to feed those in quarantine is not working properly and volunteers are "working against the clock" to provide food to 2,100 people in Kailahun and western areas of Freetown, Christian Aid said.

Jeanne Kamara, the charity's director in Sierra Leone, said: "This is a huge concern. People infected with Ebola are desperately searching for food and are in turn exposing others to the disease.

"They are jostling with people in the market and infecting others through bodily contact. We urgently have to provide food to those who need it to prevent the risk of further spread."

Video: Why Is Ebola So Dangerous?

Travel has been restricted in parts of the country preventing trucks from freely delivering food, which has increased in price because of its short supply.

The British public has so far donated more than £5m to the DEC campaign to help people affected by the Ebola crisis

The first £5m given was matched by the Government, bringing the total to more than £10m.

Another concern for aid workers is the impact of the disease on children's education.

Mike Noyes, ActionAid's head of humanitarian response, said: "At the moment all schools in Liberia are closed and the education of children is in danger of completely coming to a halt.

"Parents are very concerned about their children falling behind.

"Many families cannot afford to hire private tutors and others are afraid to hire them because of the potential risk of contact and infection.

"Children living under quarantine in Liberia and Sierra Leone are understandably frightened and unsettled."

The World Health Organisation says the disease has killed around 5,000 people and infected more than twice as many.

Ukraine Leader's Threat After Rebel Elections

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is threatening to abandon a peace plan with pro-Russian separatists after they held elections aimed at demonstrating their independence.

Sunday's election of leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine were backed by Russia, but condemned by Ukraine, the US and European powers.

Mr Poroshenko hit out at the "pseudo-elections" as a "brutal violation" of the 5 September truce deal, the Minsk Protocol.

"This farce at gunpoint has nothing in common with the expression of will," he said.

"It cannot be called an election by definition. Bandits, terrorists and interventionists can crown themselves deputies, prime ministers and ministers. They may even call themselves kings or emperors.

"Still, no matter what they put on their heads, they will remain occupants, criminals and militants."

The September accord, whose signatories included Russia, was intended to pave the way for an end to the seven-month conflict with a ceasefire and an offer of autonomy - but not independence - for the rebels.

Video: Western Ukraine Votes To Look West

But Mr Poroshenko has said he and his security chiefs will "re-examine" Kiev's commitments to the ceasefire deal, including considering the "abolition" of the key law offering separatists autonomy within Ukraine's existing borders.

Alexander Zakharchenko, a former electrician turned insurgent leader, won the election in Donetsk, while Igor Plotnitsky, an ex-Soviet army officer, was elected in neighbouring Luhansk. They both won by large margins.

Mr Zakharchenko said: "Ukraine does not want peace, as it claims. Obviously it is playing a double game."

Russia, which risks an intensifying of tough EU and US economic sanctions, ignored Western appeals not to recognise the rebel vote, which demonstrated Ukraine's inability to control the east.

"Those elected have received a mandate to resolve the practical issues of re-establishing normal life in the region," Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Russia also blocked an attempt in the UN Security Council to criticise the elections.

The US followed Europe in slamming the rebel polls, which were held without recognised election observers.

The White House said: "These sham elections contravened Ukraine's constitution... and the most basic electoral norms," while the State Department warned Moscow that recognising the polls "would only serve to isolate it further".

Woman's Abduction Captured In Chilling Video

By Sky News US Team

Police in Philadelphia have released chilling video of a woman's abduction, appealing to the public to help find her.

The missing woman was identified by police as 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither.

She was kidnapped on Sunday night. A witness said the woman was crying for help as she was being forced into a car by a man.

In the video, the suspect is seen parking the car and getting out of it. Later he is dragging Ms Freeland-Gaither down the street and into the car.

The woman struggles briefly with the man but is eventually forced into the vehicle.

"Based on how this young lady is fighting, it looks like she's fighting for her life," Philadelphia police spokesman Lieutenant John Stanford told CBS.

Her glasses and cell phone were found lying on the street where the incident took place.

Police do not believe Ms Freeland-Gaither knew her assailant.

They described the suspect as a black male, 5ft10 (177cm), medium-heavy build, aged between 25 and 30.

Pistorius Prosecutors Appeal 'Light' Sentence

South African prosecutors have branded the five-year jail term handed to Oscar Pistorius "shockingly light and innappropriate" as they formally appealed both the verdict and sentence.

The Paralympian was found guilty of culpable homicide - the equivalent of manslaughter - but cleared of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after a seven-month trial.

"Today, we announce that the NPA filed the application for leave to appeal both the conviction and sentence," the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement.

"The appeal on conviction is based on the question of law."

In papers filed in the North Gauteng High Court, where the trial was held, it added the five-year sentence "would not have been imposed by any reasonable court".

Video: Pistorius Leaves Court For Prison

The double-amputee killed Ms Steenkamp after shooting four times through a locked lavatory door in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.

Pistorius admitted shooting the 29-year-old model at his Pretoria home, but told the court that he had thought she was an intruder.

The state sought to prove that Pistorius had deliberately shot Ms Steenkamp.

Video: South Africa's Appeal Process

However, Pretoria High Court judge Thokozile Masipa found there was not enough evidence to convict the 27-year-old of premeditated murder.

Instead, she found him guilty the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

Pistorius is currently serving his sentence in a hospital section of a Pretoria prison, but could be moved to house arrest in 10 months.

If Judge Masipa agrees to hear the appeal it will extend a legal process that has already captured the attention of million of people around the world.

Mother Says She Threw Six-Year-Old From Bridge

By Sky News US Team

The body of a six-year-old boy has been recovered just hours after his mother told police she had thrown him off a bridge.

Jillian McCabe, 34, called 911 emergency number on Monday afternoon to report throwing her son, London, off the Yaquina Bay Bridge, a historic bridge on the Oregon coast.

The boy's body was found hours later in the bay after it was spotted near the Embarcadero Resort, police said.

Detectives found McCabe on the bridge and arrested her on suspicion of aggravated murder, murder and manslaughter.

She is being held on $750,000 bail.

"The fire department got there first and recovered the body," Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan Klingenberg told NBC News.

"It's absolutely a tragedy."

Boats and a helicopter from the US Coast Guard helped in the hours-long search.

NBC said a woman by the same name had launched an appeal on social media for funding to help take care of her autistic son and her husband Matt, who has multiple sclerosis.

On his profile page he says that his son, London, is six years old.

The Yaquina Bay arched bridge, one of the most famous on the Oregon coast, opened in 1936. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

China's Online Firm Alibaba Sees Revenue Soar

Net revenue at Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba fell 39% in its second quarter as the business concentrated on more acquisitions and investment in its mobile and marketing side.

However, revenue rose 54% on strong user demand for the company which does not hold stock but links buyers and sellers to each other.

Alibaba, which operates popular e-commerce platforms Taobao and Tmall in China, went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September in a $25bn (£15.6bn) initial public offering that was the largest ever.

The company's platforms account for some 80% of the fast-expanding Chinese online business.

Video: Alibaba Shares Soar On Market Debut

Chinese shoppers are predicted to have tripled their online spending between 2011 and 2015.

After that, Alibaba says it plans to expand into emerging markets and, eventually, into Europe and the U.S.

For the three months ended 30 September net income after paying preferred dividends fell to $485m (£303m), or 20 cents (12p) per share.

Excluding one-time items, net income, as expected, was 45 cents (27p) per share.

Video: Alibaba: 5 Things You Didn't Know

Alibaba said the fall was due partly to a $490m (£306) stock-option expenses due to performance-based and retention grants to some executives before its IPO, with vesting periods of four to six years.

Other costs that the company took during the quarter included consolidating newly acquired businesses, investing in its mobile operating system and digital entertainment, and marketing costs.

Revenue, as expected, was strong at $2.74bn (£1.71bn) and above analyst expectations.

Video: US Midterms: It's Now Or Never

By Dominic Waghorn, US Correspondent

Americans are voting in midterm elections that could see Barack Obama's Democratic Party lose control of the Senate.

Unprecedented amounts of money have been thrown at campaigns fuelling a vitriolic hatefest of advertising.

In North Carolina alone, more than 10,000 ads have been produced, most of them negative and costing a record $100m. That is more than three times what was spent by all the parties in the UK's last General Election.

The entire US House of Representatives is up for re-election, and a third of the Senate as well as 36 governorships.

The Republican-controlled House is not expected to change hands, but Republicans need to pick up only six Senate seats to end up in control of both chambers of legislative government.
